New student expectations

The things that I would cover in the pre-flight for a new student as far at the expectations are:
They would be doing the walk around with me explaining why we look at each part, but they would be doing the inspecting.
I would be performing the takeoffs and landings.
I would have the radios, but they should be listening to the radios calls I respond to and give, also at the end of the flight I will be asking them what they remember about the radio calls.
Once I have the airplane in cruise they will take the controls and get a feel for how the airplane handles, and do some basic visual flying.
Try to hold heading and altitude by visual reference.
That is mainly what I would cover.

New student

If I took on a student from another instructor I would look at what lesson they are on and the notes that the previous instructor placed on the prevoius 5 or 6 lessons.
I would ask the instructor anything I was unsure about from the notes, and if there are any areas that the student is weak on for their level of training.
I would ask the student what he or she felt they needed more practice on and what they feel they are strong on. Finally I think I would go out and fly the next lesson and see where I feel the student is at and go from there.
